What are Vibes? Why do they Matter?
A quick introduction to what "vibes" mean to me (2 minute read)
Friends, I’m continuing to set the stage for this project. I started with a clear picture of different vibes, as portrayed by a Mac and PC. Then I discussed the paradox that makes discussing the idea of coolness so awkward.
Next, I’m explaining what I mean by “vibes” and where this project is going.
What are Vibes?
My use of “vibes” is similar to how the word is used in popular culture:
That’s not my vibe
They have a weird vibe
What was the vibe at the party?
Vibes, like a vibration, are something you feel. They’re invisible—a kind of signal that leaves an impression that’s difficult to define. While a room, an object, or a location may have a vibe, I’m more interested in the vibes of people.
Why “Vibes”?
I chose this word because a vibe isn’t inherently good or bad. It provides a way to discuss the subtle ways that we communicate who we are.
I think of vibes as invisible rings that are unique to each of us. They send messages to others and help shape our attractions, likes, and dislikes.
Everyone Has a Vibe
My hunch is that vibes are part of being human and not limited to any race, gender, religion, culture, class, or location. From the smallest villages to the biggest cities, vibes are part of us.
Think about someone you know well and ask: what’s their vibe? Or ask yourself: what’s my vibe? These may be difficult questions to answer, in part, because we don’t have productive ways to frame these ideas. I hope to create a framework that helps.
I'm certainly not the first to explore these questions. Vibes may be linked to what we know about personality, brain structure, or genetics. They could be shaped by our education, culture, and relationships. Although I am drawing on research, my goal isn't to publish academic papers—it's to find a fresh, accessible way to think about our similarities and differences.
The Bigger Picture
While vibes are mostly personal, they may also serve as the invisible glue that helps hold social movements and pop culture trends together. They could even help explain differences in political beliefs or persuasions.
I realize this sounds a bit ambitious. To me, it IS a big idea that I’m dedicated to exploring. I’ve spent years thinking about it and the closer I look, the more I believe vibes could be a novel way to answer the timeless question: why are we the way we are?
How does this idea of “vibes” resonate with you?
